Sherborne House
Sherborne House is a stunning Grade I Listed Georgian mansion in Dorset. Humphries Weaving collaborated with Stonewood Builders & Spase Architects to assist in restoring the mansion to its full glory. The house is an independent charitable trust that hosts hospitality events, art programmes and more to allow access to the community, ensuring the continued preservation of the historic house and the Sir James Thornhill Mural. The project by Spase has been shortlisted for multiple national awards, including the Georgian Group Awards 2024.
Humphries Weaving worked closely with the teams during this project, as there was no original fabric to recreate, we combined our expertise with the client’s requests. The scope of the project allowed us to create completely bespoke fabrics for The Sherborne with custom colours and finishes.
Using our archive documents of period colours and designs, we consulted on period-appropriate fabric for the Georgian wing of the house, weaving wall upholstery fabric for the Hallway and Georgian Room.
The Georgian Room at Sherborne House
Bespoke-dyed moiré fabric
In the Georgian room, we produced a gorgeous bespoke-dyed moiré fabric. This luxurious textile, in an elegant champagne tone, was woven using a Repp weave and pressed with our specialist moiré machine. This machine, which creates a stunning, uncontrolled water-like effect, is a rare tool, and we are proud to be the last mill in the UK able to apply this service within our vertical mill. The unique moiré fabric produced for Sherborne House uses the same technique for creating textiles for the Cumberland Gallery at Hampton Court Palace.
The Hallway at Sherborne House
Crimson Caroline Damask
In the Hallway, a striking crimson was chosen for our Caroline Damask from our archive of designs. This design, dating back to the early 18th century, was redrawn by Humphries Weaving from King George II’s bed at Hampton Court Palace. For this project the scale chosen was inline with period widths, this brought the scrolling leaves to life and effectively an opulent Georgian Hallway. The striking crimson colour was chosen from our archive for period appropriateness and bespoke-dyed for the project.
This project was truly a showcase of restoration and recreation. Humphries Weaving was chosen to preserve the past with a vision for the future alongside other skilled contractors. Our extensive knowledge of Georgian textiles, paired with sustainable practices, as we are a leading British textiles mill that has achieved the highest possible OEKO-TEX accreditation, we were best placed to complete this project. Keeping the skills traditional and local, and using sustainable practices was key. It has been an honour to work on this project and preserve The Sherborne for years to come.
If you have a project that no longer has evidence of original fabric and want to bring a period building back to life, we will guide you to make that happen.
