Stourhead, Wiltshire.
A palladian mansion built in the 1720’s, home of the Hoare family. The property, now owned by the National Trust, includes an outstanding Regency library and furniture by Chippendale the younger. Stourhead also boasts one of the most popular landscaped gardens in England.
Henry Hoare built Stourhead house, designed by Colen Campbell, as a statement of fashion and good taste, funded by the wealth of the Hoare family banking business, Hoare & Co. Henry Hoare I died the year the house was completed. However Henry Hoare II, with his love of art, paintings and sculptures, built on the collection of the house.
The Dining Room
Fabric for the re upholstery of a suite of Chippendale mahogany chairs in the large Dining Room.
A silk and wool damask and in deep blue for furniture upholstery and a further matching bombazine for the chair backs. The blue was matched to the distinctive colour blue found in the original carpet.
The design is a damask redrawing of a similar tissue fabric from the Warner Textile Archive.
The Stourhead upholstery was the first project that Humphries Weaving undertook for the National Trust.
