Powis Castle

Powis Castle, Powys, Wales.

Powis Castle is a medieval castle, fortress and grand country mansion built in the 11th Century. It is located near the town of Welshpool, in Powys, Mid Wales.

Now under the National Trust the property was adapted and embellished by generations of the Herbert and Clives, who built the collections of fine paintings and furniture contained within the state rooms.

Damask Window Drape Linings for the Oak Drawing Room

Woven in gassed cotton with a heavy linen weft; the design was redrawn from a church document discovered by textile conservator May Berkouwer who restored the window drape velvet. In the headings of the Oak Drawing Room drapes a strip of the original lining was found, which was an identical cloth in design and structure to the 19th Century document in the church revived by Bodley. The design is another version of the Sommerton Damask mentioned below, a version of which can be found in the Warner Textile Archive.

Oak Drawing Room, Window Blinds

Humphries Weaving were commissioned make damask for unspecified window treatments.

Damask design in the style of Bodley was woven in natural and undyed cotton, viscose and flax for Roman blinds in the Oak Drawing Room. The design is another version, possibly 19th century, of the 1650 styled Sommerton damask which can be seen at Ham House (National Trust) and Winchester Cathedral.
