The Australian High Commission, Australia House, London.
Australia House is the oldest Australian diplomatic mission and is the longest continuously occupied foreign mission in London. King George V laid the building’s first foundation stone in 1913, with completion delayed until 1918 due to the stringencies of World War I. Much of the construction material used for the building was imported from Australia.
However, the High Commissioner and former Australian Prime Minister, Mr Andrew Fisher and some of his staff were able to move into temporary offices on the site in 1916, while work went on around them. The imposing building on the Strand is now Grade II listed and continues to be an active diplomatic mission in the United Kingdom.
